An Overview
The Station
KLUX 89.5 FM is a non-commercial educational FM Broadcast Station licensed to Diocesan Telecommunications Corporation, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 Texas Corporation headquartered in Corpus Christi which is designated by the IRS as a tax exempt entity. We signed on the air 38 years ago in 1985. KLUX is an exciting success in positive community commitment and service.
Utilizing an Easy Listening music format KLUX positions itself in the market as “Good Company” attracting large audiences in the Adult 35+ demographic and is a consistent winner with Winter Texans giving us a large listener base in the Rockport, Port Aransas area.
What makes KLUX unique is that we program “breaks”, not unlike a commercial station, and instead of commercials we air positive messages and public service announcements benefiting the community. Also included in our daily schedule is a live personality in morning drive times, financial features and news from the IRN/USA Radio network. The station format is designed to entertain, inform, inspire and serve as a radio alternative for the community so that they might consider life from a positive perspective; one that offers hope, peace and a sense of purpose.
The Audience
KLUX consistently ranks among the top three radio stations in the Corpus Christi Market with the adults 35+ demographic. We are, in fact, a major player in Corpus Christi and South Texas Radio reaching one in 10 persons each week in the Corpus Christi Metro.
The Commitment
Last year KLUX broadcast more then 40,000 public service announcements for local non-profit community organizations, civic groups, and governmental agencies. We are the only station in Corpus Christi working with the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), offering immediate access to our air product in the time of community emergencies by way of a secure CCPD radio hookup. Our daily Texas Workforce Solutions announcements that highlight available Jobs in the area have been ongoing for over 28 years. Most importantly, while other stations are controlled and programmed overnight from large cities to the north (if at all), our state of the art system allows us to respond and air US Weather Service alerts and warnings utilizing our custom designed notification systems and mini studios located in the homes of staff. KLUX has been recognized by the city of Corpus Christi and the Emergency Managers Association of Texas for its contributions in time of Civil Emergencies. In 2018 The Texas Association of Broadcasters honored KLUX with its Bonner McLane Public Service Award for its performance during Hurricane Harvey, and in 2021, the Texas Associate of Broadcasters honored our former General Manager, Mr. Marty Wind as “Broadcaster of the Year.”
KLUX programming is not what one would expect from a faith based group. We operate on the premise that serving the community and offering a positive programming atmosphere without the taint of religious proselytization is a more welcomed approach. The community seems to agree and makes it known with their listenership and support.
Funding and Underwriting
Diocesan Telecommunications Corporation, licensee of KLUX, receives more than 85% of its operating capitol from its Community Underwriters and listeners in the form of donations. The remaining operating funds come from investments and lease proceeds.
FCC rules for non-commercial stations allow us to acknowledge and thank underwriters for their financial support. A fixed number of acknowledgement slots are available in any given broadcast day with our Underwriters sharing those slots according to their participation level. As a result, and while we guarantee a minimum number of acknowledgements, current underwriters are typically receiving 33% more acknowledgments than the minimum guaranteed. A schedule of underwriting packages is attached. The one thing we have found is that once an underwriter begins supporting the station they rarely quit.
Positive public feedback is quite compelling when underwriters consider continuation of their support.
